Good Life Programs

Each summer The Good Life Center hosts a series of speakers on important topics of the day. In 2010 we celebrated the return of the meetings to Forest Farm after being held off-site for two years. The 2010 series began with "The Annotated Good Life" in which scholar Greg Joly reported on his research into the bibliography of the Nearing's seminal book, Living the Good Life - How to Live Sanely and Simply in a Troubled World (1954). The series concluded with an Open Homestead evening in late August. A big thanks to all volunteers and attendees who made these meetings a great success!

Garden and Greenhouse
In 2010 the garden prospered under the care of our gardeners. Once again planted in the manner of the Nearings, the garden was restored to its original footprint inside the hand-built stone wall. Scott's compost bins were restored to their original location near the greenhouse. A grape vine that was damaging the stone wall was removed and the wall re-pointed. The garden produce was harvested each Wednesday and donated to the Blue Hill Tree of Life Food Pantry.

Our gardeners welcomed visitors and gave tours of the house, garden and grounds five days a week from June through Labor Day, and by appointment in September. Please check this website in the spring for details on our visiting hours for 2011. Please call ahead for group visits. We are often able to make special arrangements for those not able to visit during our regular hours. Nearing books are available to purchase on-site.

Barra Homestead
The Barra homestead in East Corinth, Vermont is the former homestead of mountaineers Guy and Laura Waterman. The Watermans deeded Barra to The Good Life Center, which provides an opportunity to homestead to long-term stewards. Current Barra residents Rowan and Adam welcome visitors by appointment.
